Еще в раннем детстве увлекся гольфом, его первым тренером был отец. В возрасте 15 лет стал самым молодым победителем Национального чемпионата юниоров Ассоциации гольфа США [United States Golf Association (USGA) Junior National Championship]. В 1994 выступил за команду США на Всемирном любительском чемпионате в Версале (Франция), поступил в Стэнфордский университет [ Stanford University]. В 1995 назван игроком года конференции "Пасифик-10" [Pacific-10], в 1996 победил на чемпионате Национальной ассоциации студенческого спорта [ National Collegiate Athletic Association]. В 1994-96 три сезона подряд побеждал на чемпионате США среди любителей [U.S. Amateur Championship]. В 1996 перешел в категорию профессионалов и дважды подряд победил на турнирах Ассоциации профессиональных игроков в гольф [Professional Golfers' Association (PGA)].
